Popup Card Valentine's Design

Popup Card designs are plentiful but when it comes to being unique with your own makes, you often have to make your own designs. This popup card with a Valentine's theme is very easy to make and you do not have to come up with a lot of supplies. You can use much of your scrap cardstock and glue to make this project happen.

I came up with this design by trying various ways to make the hearts stand out. There was a great deal of not so stellar designs in the process. Many of my attempts were just OK and nothing really stood out. It wasn't until I saw a hanging ornament that I finally settled on a design.

Even though I used heavy cardstock for this project, I think crepe paper or a light paper for the hearts would probably have worked much better. When you download the template from my resource library, try a few different combinations of materials to see what works best for you.

Popup Card Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1 - Template

Download the template files (resource library) for this project and upload them to Cricut Design Space.

There is 1 file:

1. Valentine's Popup with Envelope (SVG)

Please note that you will need to use Design Space from Cricut or another app in order to read this file.

Also note that the image here has been adjusted and yours will not look exactly the same.

Step 2 - Design Space Adjustments

Make changes to the SVG files from all cut lines to cut, score, and draw lines as shown.

There are no size adjustments for this project.

For the cut out sayings, you will need to make sure the hearts and sayings are set to draw.

Please make sure you set each object and the corresponding score line to attach. Attaching will ensure your item and the scoreline will not move when adding the items to the mat.

You will need 3 sets of hearts, make sure you select the 6 hearts and duplicate them twice.

Step 3 - Make it!

The toughest part of this project is making sure you have the mats and objects lined up properly.

Here is my suggestion for what you want:

1. A mat for the envelope body.

2. A mat for the envelope top - use the same material as the envelope body.

3. A mat for the card inside and outside (put the outside part of the card at the top and the inside part of the card on the bottom - this way you can use 2 different colors of cardstock.

4. A mat for all the hearts - you will want to have 3 sets of 6 hearts. Place the hearts so that they stay within a 4" portion of the mat. See the image for details.

5. A mat for the cut out greetings.

The type of materials you use is entirely up to you. I like double-sided cardstock for most of the design and a light paper when it comes to the heart cut-outs.

Step 4 - Assembly

Here are the suggested ways to assemble your popup card:

1. Glue the heart pieces for the popup in place. Here you will be folding each heart in half and starting with the largest hearts, glue one half to the cut heart on the inside of the card. Repeat this for the other large heart.

2. Continue gluing the hearts working down to the smallest hearts.

3. Use the remaining hearts for embellishing your design.

4. Glue the greetings to the inside and outside of the card. The smaller greeting goes on the inside.

5. Glue the inside of the card to the outside of the card, be sure to match the center scorelines for an even fold.

6. Score and burnish all the envelope parts. Glue the top of the envelop in place. The smaller part of the flap goes on the inside of the envelope.

You have now created your very own Valentine's Day Popup Card. Feel free to make adjustments to make this project your very own.

Popup Card Making Good Reads

There are so many styles of popup cards, it was tough to choose one to make with my Cricut Maker. I really was excited about all the ideas I found in these books!

I have some of these in my own library as they are a great place for inspiration!

How to Make a Popup Card for Valentine's Day

Last Word

This card was a lot of fun to make, and popup cards give something ordinary a really good design. I loved making the design, and as I mentioned before, it took many iterations of the design before I finally settled on this one.

I think my passion is really around designing things - I love the problem solving aspect when it comes down to making my designs work. I certainly know a lot of ways that my designs do not work before settling on the final design. Even when it is finished, it is never really finished, I am always making tweaks - sigh - I guess a design is never really finished.

The biggest issue I had was the aligning the heart pieces in the center! I found that the heavier cardstock was more difficult to work with and the next make will certainly use a light paper for the popup portion of the card.

I hope you enjoyed this project as much as I did.
