Getting Started with Our FREE SVG Designs:

Where to get ideas:
Before we dive into downloading our free SVG files, you can also get a lot of inspiration from just doing a Google search for things that are funny such as funny quotes or work related humor sayings. Just by typing into your search bar, you can get hundreds of ideas in just a very few seconds. For our designs, our favorite places to hunt for ideas includes CreativeFabrica or DesignBundles. These are just a starting point and if you have a great sense of humor already, those quotes can be your own!

We have tons of ideas and our freebies are located in our resource library.

Choosing the Right Materials:

When it comes to choosing the right t-shirts to use for quotes, you will want to use t-shirts that have a high polyester count. The reason behind this is that polyester allows for the iron-on and heat transfer vinyl to adhere better to the shirt. Yes, you can use 100% cotton but that design might not stay on the shirt as long as you would like.

HINT: To test any design buy really inexpensive t-shirts (I have found some for $2 and love using them to check for things like layering colors, etc.

Another consideration is the color of the shirt. White and light colors work the best but if you want to use dark shirts, then your design will need to be cut from white HTV or Iron-on or other very light colors. The goal is to have your DIY t-shirt work the way you want it to. By following these guidelines, your make will look great!

Our recommended supplies list:
t-shirt in white or light colors
Iron-on vinyl
or HTV (heat-transfer Vinyl
EasyPress
Weeding Tools
Cricut cutting machine

Preparing Your Crafting Space:
Time to clear your crafting area so that you have ample room to work. Having all your materials organized and within reach will make the DIY t-shirt process smoother. You will also need to consider good lighting - this will help you to do the weeding of the design (and hopefully be able to see all the little pieces you want to remove).

Also have a spot on your work area for your HeatPress - these heat up to high temperatures and you do not want to accidently touch the heat plates by having them too close to where you are working.

Designing Your T-Shirts the Right Way

Using a Simple T-Shirt Layout:
Start with a simple layout first. If you use our more complicated free SVG design as a beginner, you may find yourself extremely frustrated with the whole process. We want you to be successful right off the bat! There is nothing more rewarding than making your own design and putting it on a t-shirt. I must admit that I love making DIY t-shirts and I have several I am constantly wearing. I even have a few with a Cricut Cutie inside the design. These are my favorite ones for sure!

Next Step! Choosing Your Colors:
Color really makes a difference when it comes to making a design really pop. Dark on dark does not work but dark on light is a much better choice. Think black and white or red and white to start. There are many other color combinations that work such as dark blue on pale yellow but the choice is ultimately yours. Pick the color of your t-shirt first, then pick the contrasting color that will show on that color. Once again dark does not work on dark!

Creating Funny and Humorous Sayings

Gather your quotes:
This is actually the toughest part of the whole process! Just writing down quotes or finding them on the web will take some time. I recommend that you keep gathering sarcastic retorts you hear or even snide remarks made to others. It is a constant search to get just the right one for your DIY t-shirt! Can you imagine making a shirt for someone who made a sarcastic remark and using it on a gift for them? This is where all the fun begins!

Adding Flourishes and Accents:
Quotes are one thing but to really make them stand out, add some pizzazz to your design! Add flourishes such as swirly underlines or little icons that really add to your design. Now I know I have been encouraging you to come up with your own quotes and designs but you still need a starting point! You can start with adding fonts to your system that have flourishes (there are flourish fonts available at both CreativeFabrica and FontBundles. Go ahead and do a search for a few you can use, then install them.

Personalizing Your Designs

Adding a Personal Touch:
Here is where the fun all begins! Even though you will want to download our 10 free SVG designs, you should still personalize them! You can always start with our ideas and then add to them. We do not stop you from using our designs on anything you want - no license required. We just ask you share our blog with as many people as possible.

By adding a special flair to your t-shirt design, you are creating a signature of your own! Nothing should get in your way of making a ton of fun with humor!

Final Note

Every season brings a reason to create DIY t-shirts. Remember to choose the perfect colors so that your quotes are visible and not hidden by poor color choices. As a reminder, the higher the polyester count, the better the t-shirt will turn out. however, that does not mean you cannot use cotton t's.

Your turn! Go and gather those quotes or download ours and start making funny t-shirts that you will love to wear.

If you have not already done so, go join our FREE Creative Crafters Club for hundreds of FREE SVG Designs. This is where we have your 10 t-shirt designs - look for asset #431 - it is a zip file that contains both SVG and PNG files for your use.
